Avere Systems has announced the introduction of Cloud Snapshots to the Avere 4.5 operating system. This new feature allows IT to use snapshots as a disaster recovery solution in the cloud with a familiar NAS-style user interface. In addition, Cloud Snapshots uses the flexibility of cloud storage all the while protecting user data against disk, controller, array and entire site failures. Avere OS can be offered as a software-only solution or a physical, hardware-included appliance, and is designed to satisfy demanding NAS environments that require full-featured NFS and SMB/CIFS functionality as well as scalable performance.

Whereas typical disaster recovery solutions normally require multiple backups and expensive, complex mirroring software, Avere claims that Cloud Snapshots provide an affordable and simple alternative: They are space-efficient, support 1,024 snapshots per bucket, can be automated or run manually, and offer point in-time consistency across all objects in a bucket. They also do not require multiple NAS arrays.
Cloud Snapshots are closely integrated with the Avere FlashCloud file system, which helps to eliminate the latency associated with the cloud. By eliminating this latency, Avere indicates that IT will be able to choose the right storage at the right location, which translates standard NAS protocols and safeguards application investments.
Avere’s new disaster recovery option is also supported on their FXT Edge filers, both physical and virtual. The Virtual version of FXT Edge filers was released a few months ago, offering the flexibility needed to deploy and scale compute in the cloud, by using both on-premises and cloud-based storage resources.
Pricing and Availability
Cloud Snapshots are now available and are included in Avere OS 4.5 at no cost. Currently, they support AWS Simple Storage Service (S3), Amplidata and Cleversafe cloud storage.
