Seagate Announces World’s Highest Density Mobile Hard Drive Technology

by Lyle Smith

Seagate Technology has announced that they have made a major advancement in areal density with a new hard disk that offers upwards of 2TB in capacity inside a slim 7mm package. Seagate indicates that the final product form will allow OEMs to design a new generation of extremely thin “elegant mobile products” with stylish, light-weight, fast, power-efficient and cost-effective builds.

The new Seagate drive technology is the market’s first to leverage recording-subsystem components (head, media, preamp, channel) in order to reach larger areal densities. Using advanced, high-spatial efficiency mechanics, the new drives will be able to feature lightweight, low acoustics and strong mechanical robustness designs with new levels of drive stability when intense shock and vibrations ultimately occur.

Seagate indicates that the new drive weighs in at 3.17 oz., which is roughly 25 percent lighter than the previous generation of the company’s mobile hard drive products. Because it is a smaller drive, it will make an ideal fit in numerous use cases and applications due to its space-saving form factor. In addition, the new technology will give its mobile hosts additional designed-in features, including larger batteries, more memory, and better air circulation.

Though currently in only a traditional HDD format, Seagate is also exploring a possible hybrid form factor as well.
