Today IBM announced the launch of its new enterprise hybrid storage family, the IBM DS8880 family. This new family of next generation of storage is designed to accelerate business critical applications and real-time data insights for clients requiring increased performance, data protection and uncompromised, nonstop availability.

Enterprises such as banking, financial, and healthcare need constant uptime and the risk of data loss minimized as much as possible. Inadequate protection against downtime or data breaches can cost digital companies millions if not causing them to fail entirely. IBM’s latest hybrid storage family will help quell these concerns while accelerating mission-critical applications up to two times faster than alternatives.

The DS8880 is all about uptime and availability. All components are redundant and upgradable online, this minimizes downtime to less than 30 seconds a year according to IBM (they also claim users can have even less downtime with a multi-site disaster recovery solution installed). The DS8880 allows remote mirroring as well as integration with cloud-based and mission critical environments such as IBM z Systems and other IBM compute platforms. With all the above features and benefits, IBM also states that users will see a 30% reduction in footprint for a 19-inch rack.

The new DS8880 family incorporates a high performance flash enclosure module, can scale up to 3PB, offers advanced compliance and security features, and has a GUI that includes intuitive navigation and streamlined configuration processes, providing, customizable views, interactive menus and a configuration wizard.

DS8880 models include:

IBM DS8884  – a lower cost, space-saving system with advanced, easy-to-use operations and continuous availability for running critical workloads on IBM z Systems, IBM Power Systems or distributed systems, as a dedicated platform for consolidated systems or for multiple platforms.

IBM DS8886 – an enterprise class system that accelerates critical applications with up to two times better performance backed by more than six nines availability, multi-site replication; and IBM z Systems, IBM Power Systems  or distributed systems integration — in an easily scalable package.

IBM DS8888 – an all-flash Storage system, with availability in early 2016, designed for extreme acceleration of mission critical applications, with nonstop availability and simplified integration.

Availability and pricing

The IBM DS8880 family is available today and starts at $50,000.
