HPE Unveils Software-Defined HPC Platform

by Adam Armstrong

Today Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) announced its new high-performance computing (HPC) solutions. These new solutions include a comprehensive software-defined platform, enhancements to its Apollo servers, as well as, a new ANSYS computer-aided engineering (CAE) software based solution designed to help manufacturing organizations optimize their design simulation deployments.

HPC has several benefits, but when it is mentioned, one often pictures researchers and scientists toiling away in a lab awaiting a research breakthrough. In other words, it is not exactly something that is thought of as mainstream in the enterprise, though it's slowly starting to be adopted more and more. Industries such as energy, life sciences, financial services and manufacturing are starting to see the benefits that HPC can bring to their companies. Though the benefits make HPC intriguing, there is still a stigma of complexity that slows its adoption. HPE’s announcement today aims to ease the fears HPC and allow companies of all sizes easily benefit from HPC.

HPE’s first step in simplifying and accelerating the configuration, deployment and management of clusters for HPC, is their software-defined HPC platform, HPE Core HPC Software Stack with HPE Insight Cluster Management Utility v8.0. This platform is designed for server cluster environments that may need to scale to thousands of compute nodes. HPE states that their HPE Core HPC Software Stack is a pre-integrated, pre-tested single software suite that combines open source-based application development tools, libraries, and compilers with HPE cluster management capabilities including HPE iLO and simple cluster set up tools.

Building off of the HPE Core HPC Software Stack, HPE is making new system innovations to its Apollo line that will be managed by the new software stack. These innovations are for HPE’s Apollo 6000 system with new HPE ProLiant XL260a server trays. The new server trays are based on the next generation of the Intel Xeon Phi processor family and the Intel Omni-Path Architecture (Intel OPA) to reduce latency, and increase bandwidth and performance. HPE is also making system innovations to its Apollo 200 system and ProLiant DL server platforms with Intel OPA fabric options. HPE claims that customers will be able to achieve new levels of performance, efficiency, and reliability along with the ability to run HPC applications in a massively parallel manner with minimal code modification.

HPE is also enhancing both the Apollo 6000 and Apollo 2000 systems with next-generation 100Gb/s InfiniBand solutions from Mellanox Technologies. As we stated previous these new solutions from Mellanox will yield greater HPC performance with new Message Passing Interface (MPI) offloads, such as MPI Tag Matching and MPI AlltoAll operations, advanced dynamic routing, and new capabilities to perform various data algorithms

HPE also introduced its new HPE ANSYS solution for CAE that aims to help companies scale their compute power to better accommodate the escalating demands of increasingly complex simulation models. This new solution can handle large data sets and works with both large enterprises and midmarket customers. The solution is pre-tested on the Apollo 2000 and HPE claims that it can improve application performance, provide faster resource provisioning and lower TCO. HPE goes on to claim that this solution can complete a CAE simulation in days compared to weeks, four times higher resource utilization with HPC cluster compared to workstation based solutions and up to two times more compute capacity per square foot.
