Today, enterprise storage company Pure Storage announced new enhancements to its Evergreen Storage. All of today’s updates are geared towards saving the end consumer more money, both at the initial sticker price of hardware purchases and long-term maintenance. The end goal, Pure Storage claims, is to avoid the ultra-expensive “forklift upgrade”—the complete replacement of an outdated system and its components.
Adjusting their pricing model, Pure is offering what it calls Capacity Consolidation: helping consumers consolidate older, sparser flash storage with a trade-in credit for newer, denser memory. As it sits right now, Pure Storage’s FlashBlade and FlashArray hardware offer petabyte-scale data sets that can run as little as $1 per usable gigabyte. By using both Capacity Consolidation in conjunction with Upgrade Flex and Forever Flash in order to upgrade controller and storage hardware frequently, that goal becomes attainable. By applying preventative obsolescence maintenance, customers won’t have to suffer the downtimes and enormous cost of upgrading a whole system from stem to stern—nor will they have to re-buy any hardware or software.
Today, Pure also launched its Right Size Guarantee: a program which allows customers to purchase storage directly on an effective capacity basis instead of gross capacity. That way, no admin will be caught with a mismatch between what they need and what they have. Pure leverages its cloud-based storage management service and will work with clients to determine effective capacity requirements, and implement the ideal solution. Should this fall short of the customer’s needs, Pure backs its solutions with a guarantee to solve the problem with additional flash if necessary.
Availability
Both services will be a part of the Evergreen Storage program’s existing catalog of features, and are available at time of publish.
