EMC NetWorker 8.0 Released – 50% Faster, 3X More Scalable

by Brian Beeler

EMC has launched the latest version of their unified backup and recovery software, NetWorker 8.0. The update is highlighted by increased performance and scalability, deeper integration with EMC Data Domain deduplication systems, expanded enterprise application support and improved management and security features. EMC credits a revised architecture for NetWorker which lowers processor and RAM demands to drive up to 3 times more scalability with existing resources. Additionally, the new "client direct" feature removes NetWorker storage nodes from the data path, reducing backup times by 50% or more.

Data Domain Integration
While performance and efficiency gains at large are great, for EMC Data Domain users, the DD Boost integration in Networker 8.0 drives even more value. Because the Boost libraries are part of NetWorker, the NetWorker storage node can check for unique data before sending it off to the Data Domain system. This process takes weight off of the Data Domain system while also reducing network traffic by as much as 90%. NetWorker has other Data Domain aware features that speed configuration and management of jobs like clone replications, which are created easily for storage pools both on and off site. EMC has also updated and added new monitoring and reporting tools adding to overall ease of use.

Improved Application Support
NetWorker had already supported several applications like Oracle, SAP, Sybase and Microsoft’s Exchange, SQL and SharePoint applications. In the NetWorker 8.0 update, EMC has improved their Microsoft integration by adding SQL Server 2012 support. They’ve also brought granular level recovery to Exchange, SharePoint and Hyper-V as well as support for cluster shared volumes in Hyper-V.

Management and Security
NetWorker 8.0 features new management and security features. Foremost is multi-tenancy management which offers zoning of data, devices and users in shared backup environments. Zoning provides isolate of data and users for more thorough data security. NetWorker has also been updated with centralized administration and reporting screens.

Availability
EMC NetWorker 8.0 is available now and is sold on a capacity-based license model.
