Advancements in PCIe Storage including SCSI Express [STA 2012]

Interoperability has been the watchword at many 2012 SCSI Trade Association (STA) Technology Showcase demonstrations. Recent performance advances in data storage performance could splinter hardware platforms in the enterprise, and STA sponsors including HP, Fusion-io, HGST, LSI, PMC-Sierra, SanDisk, Seagate, and Western Digital were eager to distinguish themselves with solutions that take advantage of increased performance while also allowing mixed storage ecosystems with backwards-compatibility. New SCSI Express products bring together the time-tested SCSI feature set and tools with a high-throughput, low-latency PCIe 3.0 bus.

Express Bay’s PCIe 3.0 bus and SFF-8639 multi-protocol connector illustrates one new approach that extends the value of existing SCSI-based investments and facilitates co-existence with SAS storage. Express Bay systems support SAS, SATA, SATA Express, SCSI Express, and NVM Express devices, making it an appealing strategy for rolling out PCIe in enterprise-class SCSI and mixed storage environments.
