Atlantis Announces Cost-Effective VDI As Low As $125/Desktop

by Adam Armstrong

At Citrix Synergy in Las Vegas this year several companies are announcing new products and services. Earlier this week we covered Nutanix working with Citrix to release VDI aimed at the midmarket for as low as $415/desktop. Not to be outdone, Atlantis Computing is announcing VDI as low as $125 per desktop. To bring this to market Atlantis has entered into a strategic alliance with Citrix that will combine the Citrix Workspace Suite software stack running on Citrix XenServer with Atlantis HyperScale all-flash hyperconverged appliances and Atlantis USX software-defined storage solutions.

Atlantis has compute, storage, networking and virtualization included in its HyperScale. Atlantis claims that this reduces infrastructure costs dropping the prices as low as $125 per desktop for a virtual desktop and $82 per user for a hosted shared desktop. Atlantis states that some of their customers were able to simplify their Citrix XenDesktop infrastructure by using Atlantis HyperScale hyperconverged appliances in place of arrays. This can both cut costs and improve end-user experience.

Another big benefit of this new solution is that it can be deployed as a hyperconverged appliance or as software that works with existing infrastructure hardware. Customers need at least one-server but they can start there and add as they need to scale and grow.

The Atlantis Hyperscale infrastructure includes the complete Citrix Workspace Suite, which includes Citrix XenDesktop and XenApp, as well as Citrix NetScaler, and Atlantis infrastructure data reduction technology, which they claim can increase storage capacity by up to 90%. For organizations that are looking for cost-effective DR site implementation, they can take advantage of Atlantis fast cloning that works with Citrix Lifecycle manager to provision thousands of desktops in minutes

Availability

The Citrix and Atlantis hyperconverged solution is expected to be available in the third quarter of 2016.
