Today, Backblaze announced a new Object Lock feature for their B2 Cloud Storage service. The Object Lock feature does exactly what it says it does; it locks stored data to prevent erasure or alteration. Backblaze was founded in 2007. The company offers both a cloud object storage system and an online tool to backup to B2 Cloud Storage. Earlier this year, they added an “S3 Compatible” API allowing a way for AWS customers to painlessly switch to Backblaze’s B2 Cloud Storage.

According to Backblaze, data secured using Backblaze’s new Object Lock feature are secured from modification, manipulation, or deletion during the immutability time period. How long immutability lasts is set by the customer when first moving their data into Backblaze’s cloud. Once immutability is set, the duration of immutability is necessarily unchangeable as well. Data secured in this way provides good protection against ransomware because the data can’t be encrypted or copied and deleted by a malicious attacker. It is also an excellent way to store files to satisfy legal data retention requirements.
Much like Amazon S3’s feature of the same name, Backblaze Object Lock provides support for Veeam’s Immutability feature. Veeam usually only offers Immutability through Amazon S3 or S3 Compatible object storage repositories. Per Veeam, immutable data within the capacity extent cannot be subject to the following operations:
- Manual removal of data
- Removal of data by the retention policy
- Removal of data using any cloud service provider tools.
- Removal of data by the cloud service provider technical support department
- Removal of data by the Remove deleted items data after option
