Buffalo CloudStor Two-Bay NAS Announced [CES 2011]

by Brian Beeler

Buffalo Technology has released the CloudStor two-bay storage unit. While it’s easy to call it a NAS, Buffalo prefers to call the Pogoplug-powered solution a personal cloud storage unit. Talking with Buffalo representatives, they’re most excited about the easy configuration and setup, which is key for a device of this nature. It’s nearly plug and play, and Buffalo has a series of apps to make it easy to access your data, photos and so on via the CloudStor via almost any device.

Talking with Buffalo representatives, they’re most excited about the easy configuration and setup, which is key for a device of this nature. It’s nearly plug and play, and Buffalo has a series of apps to make it easy to access your data, photos and so on via the CloudStor via almost any device.

Buffalo CloudStor

The CloudStor is a little but of a misnomer though, as your data doesn’t actually reside in the cloud. The data resides on the two 3.5″ hard drives in the enclosure. Via mobile app or computer, the CloudStor user experience is the same; it looks and operates just like a hard drive inside your computer, accessible via a drive letter on PCs and as a device through Finder on Mac computers.

CloudStor also features private share support for LAN based network sharing and pairing with the µTorrent client, streaming support to popular media devices including gaming consoles and integrated Time Machine backup support.

The unit itself feels well built and is surprisingly small, with only a little overhead beyond the space requirements for the two hard drives. From what we saw of the interface demo and streaming on multiple devices, the CloudStor looks like it has a lot to offer, especially with the aggressive price point starting at $170 for the 1TB model.

Pricing and Availability

The Buffalo CloudStor will be available in February for an MSRP of $169.99 for the 1 TB CloudStor (CS-WX1.0TL) and $269.99 for the 2 TB CloudStor Pro (CS-WV2.0TL).
