Today Caringo, Inc. announced enhancements to both its Swarm Scale-Out Hybrid Storage, now in version 9.5, and SwarmNFS. The 9.5 release of Swarm increases interoperability between it and SwarmNFS 2.0 that in turn improves overall performance. Caringo will be exhibiting the new capabilities of Swarm 9.5 and SwarmNFS 2.0 at the JB&A pre-NAB Technology event April 8-9, 2018 as well as in booth number SL11807 of the NAB Show Expo in Las Vegas, NV April 9-12, 2018.

Caringo Swarm was first released in 2006 and has been the company’s masthead object storage product. After over a decade of use, Caringo has been able to improve Swarm to make it the foundation for several use cases including M&E, HPC, IoT, government, medical, research, education, cloud storage, and enterprise IT. SwarmNFS was released in 2016. The company stated that SwarmNFS was the first lightweight file protocol converter that brings scale-out object storage (e.g. built-in data protection, high-availability, and powerful metadata) to the NFSv4 protocol.
The latest enhancements allows SwarmNFS 2.0 to leverage a new feature in Swarm 9.5, which only sends the data of an object that has been changed, an industry first for object storage. The changed data is combined with existing data. This can see a major boost to performance as bandwidth requirements go down and users no longer need to re-upload all of the data even though only a small portion changed. Caringo claims that this reduces the gap between files and object, and has improved overall NFS performance up to 20x for concurrent client access and file operations.
Highlights include:
- Ability to directly edit object metadata through the user interface. This complements the long-standing feature that has been available to applications.
- Storage transaction metadata filtering for Managed Service Providers (MSPs) and other direct-to-Internet deployments to manage bandwidth and information flow.
- Hybrid Cloud tiering capabilities have been enhanced for improved support of Caringo Swarm Hybrid Cloud for Microsoft Azure.
