Caringo has announced SwarmNFS, touted as the first lightweight file protocol converter that brings scale-out object storage (e.g. built-in data protection, high-availability, and powerful metadata) to the NFSv4 protocol. SwarmNFS is a stateless Linux process that directly integrates with Caringo Swarm so that mount points can be accessed from anywhere. Caringo claims that their new technology provides a global namespace across NFSv4, S3, HDFS, and SCSP/HTTP, indicating that it delivers data distribution and data management at scale without the burden of the high cost and complexity that is inherent of legacy solutions.

SwarmNFS uses a protocol conversion approach that streams data in parallel between native NFSv4 applications and Caringo Swarm scale-out storage. As a result, spooling and staging is no longer needed, which considerably reduces the disk, CPU and RAM needed for native file support, and eliminates the bottlenecks present in existing connector and gateway solutions. This means a stateless process that can be quickly deployed at a fraction of the hardware resources of a gateway.
SwarmNFS also allows organizations to use existing native NFS file-based applications without having to customize them beforehand. Users can then leverage an unlimited pool of scale-out storage with built-in data protection in areas including content distribution, video surveillance, research, big data, digital curation and document management.
