The Internet of Things (IoT) is growing dramatically; the estimate now is 50 billion connected devices by 2020. Everyday there is a new Internet enabled device aimed at making our lives easier. The IoT of things may present a few challenges: one consumer concern is having multiple smart devices that don’t share protocols for speaking with each other. There is also the concern of privacy and security. The privacy and security concern stems from the massive amounts of Big Data that these devices are going to be generating. Storing all of this data presents a problem in its own right, but attempting to analyze and gain insights is a whole other ball of wax. This is where ParStream becomes an attractive purchase for Cisco.

ParStream’s analytics platform was purpose-built to handle the massive amounts of data generated by the IoT. ParStream enables users to perform real-time analytics on Big Data in a cost-effective manner. And from the beginning ParStream has been able to out perform some of the larger vendors. ParStream can access and analyze data so much faster by using its innovative compression and indexing capabilities. Data is also stored at the edge versus a centralized server and have results tracked across a highly distributed network. An example would be using ParStream for a wind turbine company. Data can be gathered for thousands of turbines and stored at the edge giving the company near instant access to information such as wind direction and temperature. This data can benefit the company by decreased equipment downtime through predictive maintenance, increased productivity, and historical analysis of environmental patterns.

The addition of ParStream will complement and enhance Cisco’s current data and analytics portfolio. The acquisition of ParStream will strengthen their ability to do analytics at the edge where the IoT generates the majority of the data it collects. Deriving intelligence from Big Data at the edge could be very valuable for Cisco as it builds out its hyper distributed intelligent infrastructure.
