Citrix Announces Microsoft Office Online Integration with ShareFile

by Lyle Smith

At Citrix Synergy 2015, the company has announced new innovations that advance the experience and security offered by ShareFile, including integration with Microsoft Office Online, which allows users to edit Microsoft Office Word, Excel and PowerPoint files directly from within the ShareFile web application. For example, ShareFile users will be able to create and outline a PowerPoint presentation or other Microsoft Office document on a phone, collaborate on content with colleagues and vendors from a laptop, dictate speaker notes on a tablet, and present via an Apple Watch.

Users will be able to edit any Microsoft Word, Excel or PowerPoint file without leaving ShareFile; all from the convenience of a web browser or computer.  As a result, Citrix believes that this will make collaboration faster and easier all the while saving time and increasing productivity. This new integration also means that users will no longer have to rely on their local Microsoft Office applications to edit a file; they can now edit the files directly from within a web browser with all changes automatically saved back to ShareFile (editing will require an Office 365 account, however). This integration with Office Online is made possible by the company’s membership in Microsoft’s Cloud Storage Partner Program. Citrix is also introducing a ShareFile Platinum edition, which provides users with a collaborative workspace where anyone can securely exchange, track, edit and e-sign content without storage limitations.

Also announced by Citrix is ShareFile’s ability to classify items based on their content and enforce sharing restrictions based on data categories. This will be made possible through integrations with leading data loss prevention (DLP) solutions from Symantec and others.  Enterprises in highly-regulated industries that need to be able to control file sharing based on the content inside the files themselves will find this particularly useful.

Availability

DLP integration functionality will be available in Q2 2015 while the Microsoft Office Online integration and Platinum edition will be available in June, 2015.
