Disaster recovery is an important part to any business. The major problem has always been the high infrastructure costs and the complexity of deployment. While the cloud has been an attractive option (no investment in dedicated data center infrastructure and integration with virtualization platforms reduce complexity), it is based on a shared, multi-tenant architecture managed by a third party which often brings up security concerns.

The collaboration between CloudLink and EMC gives customers a software defined secure VM disaster recovery solution deployed as virtual appliances. RecoverPoint enables customers to protect their VMs with local and remote replication and allows any Point in Time recovery. SecureVSA encrypts data in motion as it moves to the cloud and data at rest in the cloud disaster recovery site. The encryption key remains with the data owner and are not available in the cloud. The net result is that virtualization admins can easily set up policy-driven cloud-based DR strategies for mission critical applications without fear of data security issues. The collaboration also enables service providers to offer a comprehensive DR as a service platform.

Key highlights to the SecrureVSA-RecoverPoint collaboration for customers include:

  • Reduction in deployment cost and complexity
  • Integrated CloudLink data security addresses data privacy and regulatory compliance
  • Agentless solution forgoes the need to modify workloads
  • Enterprise-controlled encryption key regardless of where data resides
  • Both data-at-rest and data-in-motion are encrypted and secure
  • Friction-free deployment with integration into VMware vSphere
  • SecureVSA hybrid cloud-ready data security single pane of glass to deploy and manage data

Key benefits to the SecrureVSA-RecoverPoint collaboration for service providers include:

  • Offering secure DRaaS is a compelling source of revenue and a competitive differentiator
  • Agentless solution that is transparent to underlying storage infrastructure as well as application workloads
  • Encryption can be enabled on a per-VM or per-customer basis rather than for the entire storage array
  • DRaaS in a multi-tenant or multi-branch cloud environment where each tenant has full control of the security of their replicated data
  • Flexible key management options enable customer-controlled keys

Availability

The combined solution is expected to be available in the forth quarter of 2014 through EMC and EMC channel partners. The pricing model is subscription-based and dependent on capacity.
