Today Cohesity launched what it is calling the industry’s first storage platform that combines end-to-end data protection and big data storage on distributed, infinitely scalable architecture, Cohesity Orion 5.0. According to Cohesity, this new platform will perform both as a backup solution and searchable archive for large amounts of structured and unstructured data. The latest version of Orion is set to help companies simplify administration, reduce overall data copies, accelerate search and retrieval, all while lowering storage costs.
Today Cohesity launched what it is calling the industry’s first storage platform that combines end-to-end data protection and big data storage on distributed, infinitely scalable architecture, Cohesity Orion 5.0. According to Cohesity, this new platform will perform both as a backup solution and searchable archive for large amounts of structured and unstructured data. The latest version of Orion is set to help companies simplify administration, reduce overall data copies, accelerate search and retrieval, all while lowering storage costs.
Archiving data (both structured and unstructured) and backup have historically been separate. Companies have kept different solutions for each. However the nature and growth of data has changed dramatically in recent years. Massive amounts of unstructured data are being generated on a near constant basis. Storing this data is leading to huge inefficiencies as several copies of the same data are being stored at several points. Cohesity’s Orion 5.0 aims to correct this by storing all the data at one point and acting as both archive and backup.
Orion 5.0 will seamlessly span on-premises and cloud infrastructure, for both data protection and archiving, and it can be managed through a simple, single-pane-of-glass user interface. The platform will be fully indexed and searchable, while making access to the data easier, provide greater insights, and help to eliminate redundant copies. Cohesity states that the data will be “instantly” accessible to any application and user via standard protocols including NFS, CIFS/SMB and S3.
Key enhancements include:
- Simultaneous multiprotocol access to content via NFS, CIFS/SMB and S3 protocols
- Global in-line deduplication and compression across all content, including the industry’s first and only deduplicated S3 object storage
- Global indexing and search for rapid retrieval
- File system and user quotas with audit logs
- Ability to back up hypervisors beyond VMware vSphere, including Microsoft Hyper-V, Nutanix AHV, and Linux KVM
- Ability to back up NAS devices beyond NetApp, including EMC Isilon, Pure Storage Flashblade and any generic NAS, for both NFS and CIFS/SMB file systems
- New file-level backups for physical Linux servers, in addition to volume-based backups, and bare-metal restores for Windows servers
- Any-point-in-time, instant restores at scale, validated by a recent ESG Spotlight Report
Availability
Cohesity Orion 5.0 is expected to be generally available within 90 days.
