Today, Commvault announced additions to its Intelligent Data Management Portfolio. Commvault says that Commvault Disaster Recovery, Commvault Backup & Recovery, and Commvault Complete Data Protection are all now in general availability (GA). When Commvault announced this release last July, we noted that Commvault already offers very similar-sounding services.
Commvault Complete Data Protection is just a fancy name for a sales option that packages Commvault Disaster Recovery with Commvault Backup & Recovery. To better understand the complete package, we need to look at what these two components are on their own.
Commvault Disaster Recovery is the name of the Commvault product aimed at providing automated disaster recovery. The product enables replication between on-premises and cloud. The company says that, as of today, it supports VMware Cloud on AWS, Microsoft Azure VMware Solution, Google Cloud VMware Engine, and Oracle Cloud VMware Solution.
Commvault Backup & Recovery can be used as part of Commvault Complete Data Protection or as a standalone product for ensuring data availability for all workloads. It supports containers, cloud-native, and virtual workloads. It seems to have less of an emphasis on automation than Commvault Disaster Recovery in favor of providing very granular options. The product can zoom in on a single file, recover a full system, as well as several options in-between. This is not to say the product doesn’t provide any automation tools at all. Commvault Backup & Recovery offers automated processes to migrate workloads from on-premise to the cloud or between clouds.
