Coraid has announced its new ZX-Series family of servers for cloud, video, and big data. The ZX-Series is powered by the ZFS file system along with Coraid’s EtherDrive technology, which abstracts distributed SAN storage as a local disk.
Coraid has announced its new ZX-Series family of servers for cloud, video, and big data. The ZX-Series is powered by the ZFS file system along with Coraid’s EtherDrive technology, which abstracts distributed SAN storage as a local disk.
The ZX-Series uses massively parallel 1Gb/10Gb Ethernet connectivity to improve performance by sending disk commands and data as raw L2 Ethernet packets. The ZX-Series can connect to Coraid EtherDrive SRX arrays via ATA over ethernet (AoE) for scale-out architectures up to multi-petabyte capacity that can saturate 10GbE links at 1,800 MB/s according to the manufacturer.
Redundant Array of Independent Nodes (RAIN) configurations provide 6+2 disk redundancy at 1/3 lower cost than mirroring. Because EtherDrive uses every path automatically, it can write to all the drives in parallel without requiring multipathing, port bonding, special switches, or switch configuration.
ZX-Series hybrid storage pools use ARC and L2 ARC to improve the performance of reads and intent log (ZIL) for writes. ZIL plus copy-on-write optimization allows the ZX-Series to condition random I/O into higher-performing sequential transfers.
