Spectra Logic announced the successful validation of its On-Prem Glacier solutions for integration with NetApp StorageGRID object-based storage environments. With this solution, organizations can efficiently tier inactive data to object-based tape storage, achieving significant scalability, enhanced security features, and considerable cost advantages over traditional public cloud storage solutions.
On-Prem Glacier
The Spectra On-Prem Glacier object-based tape solution offers an efficient and cost-effective means for backup and archival storage, compatible with Amazon S3 and Amazon S3 Glacier APIs. The seamless integration facilitated by native Amazon S3 protocol support in NetApp StorageGRID enables organizations to effortlessly incorporate Spectra On-Prem Glacier storage into their existing data management workflows.
This solution not only bolsters ransomware resilience but also optimizes cloud data retrieval processes, effectively reducing or eliminating costly egress fees. It is particularly suited for the management and long-term retention of large-scale unstructured data.
Vishnu Vardhan, Director of Product Management for Object Storage at NetApp, highlighted the value of this integration, stating, “The Spectra On-Prem Glacier solution provides NetApp StorageGRID customers with the ability to add a Glacier tier configured with object-based tape to extend the capacity and reduce the costs of their long-term on-prem object storage. The validated integration gives organizations more flexibility in how they store their data, especially archives and backups that are not in active use. By combining both technologies, our customers can get both the agility of flash and the longevity of tape to help ensure their data is always ready when they need it.”
Key benefits of the Spectra On-Prem Glacier include:
- Enhanced retrieval speeds for cold data, surpassing traditional cold cloud storage tiers.
- Advanced cybersecurity measures, including data immutability, encryption in transit and at rest, and air-gapped storage options.
- Greater control over data, facilitating compliance with increasingly stringent governance, sovereignty, and retention regulations.
- Improved sustainability through energy-efficient technology options.
- Substantial cost reductions, offering savings of up to two-thirds compared to similar cold cloud storage solutions.
Chris Bukowski, Senior Manager of Product Marketing at Spectra Logic, expressed enthusiasm for the validation, noting, “We’re excited that NetApp has validated Spectra On-Prem Glacier for use by StorageGRID customers. Spectra Logic is delivering an innovative on-premises solution to manage and optimize storage for long-term data retention. We recognize the significance of the increasing costs of storing data in the cloud. This integration provides a valuable new option for reducing cloud data retrieval and accompanying egress fees while scaling to near-limitless capacity with less complexity.”
Tape Powers the Cloud
In a recent podcast, we spent quite a bit of time discussing how tape powers some of the largest parts of the cloud. Most have no idea about how large tape is in the cloud, thanks to technologies like object-based tape. With the need for data to be accessible now more than ever, thanks to innovations in AI, this topic of big data availability will continue to increase in relevance across a wide variety of organizations.
