DDN Tintri IntelliFlash H-Series Released

by Michael Rink
IntelliFlash H-Series

Two years ago, DataDirect Networks (DDN) decided to buy Tintri. So far, DDN has continued releasing products under the Tintri brand name while slowly incorporating Tintri’s technology. Today, DDN has taken another step along their surprisingly long road to fully absorbing the company they bought. Tintri just released a new hybrid NVMe/HDD series of systems that will be available under both the DDN and Tintri brand names, the IntelliFlash H-series. The company also announced an addition to their VMStore product line, the VMStore T7000. The VMStore T7000 is due out Q1 CY2021. We interviewed the Field CTO of Tintri earlier this year; you should listen to the conversation if you’re interested in an inside look at the company. DataDirect Networks was formed by a merger of MegaDrive and ImpactData in 1998. DDN focuses on storage solutions.

IntelliFlash H-Series

The IntelliFlash H-Series of hybrid flash systems is available from both DDN and their wholly-owned subsidiary, Tintri. The systems are, or rather will be, available in two sizes. The larger, H6200 systems are extra deep, measuring 6.9” H x 17.56” W 42.52” D (175.3mm H x 446mm W x 1080mm D) , and are available immediately. The company also plans to release a more typical depth H6100 system with lower capacity in the first quarter of next year. Both versions are split into 2U controller units and 4U expansion units. It looks like both platforms will use the same or nearly identical controllers that support up to 24 NVMe SSDs to provide the flash half of the hybrid system. In both cases, the controller has a different depth than the expansion units, with the controller measuring 3.45″ H x 17.58″ W 33.5″ D (87.6mm H x 446.4mm W x 850mm D). The larger H6200 expansion units support up to 90 SAS HDDs per expansion unit. The smaller H6100 expansion units support only up to 24 SAS HDDs per expansion unit. A surprisingly low capacity for such a tall expansion unit. Both systems offer the same networking options. Administration ports consist of 4x 1GbE, 2x 1GbE (IPMI). Customers have a choice of 16x 10GbE, 8x 25GbE, or 8x 100GbE for ethernet data ports. Fiber ports are also available in either 8x 8G or 16x 16G FC. The system comes with Tintri’s IntelliFlash Operating Environment that provides deduplication, compression, snapshotting, cloning, and a host of other features common to the entire line. The H-Series also supports both SAN and NAS protocols on a single system.

Tintri hasn’t shared many details about their not too distant release of their Vmstore T7000. What we do know is that they claim the system will offer a higher density of NVMe storage to support more VMs in the same physical volume than their previous products. Each unit is expected to support just 10 drives with support for what Tintri is calling “non-disruptive drive-by-drive expansion.” They also claim the system will be 30% faster but have not yet shared details on what processors they will use to achieve that improvement.
