Dell Announces Cloud Client Computing for Retail

by Mark Kidd

Dell is now accepting proof-of-concept requests to implement Cloud Client Computing for Retail, an in-store cloud environment. Cloud Client Computing for Retail is made up of three modules: thin and mobile endpoints with and without POS peripherals; on premise desktop virtualization infrastructure; and cloud-based desktop virtualization infrastructure. Dell’s recent acquisitions of Wyse, SonicWALL, and Quest allow the company to offer an end-to-end retail cloud solution that includes for the first time virtualized point-of-sale (POS) systems.

Dell’s Cloud Client Computing virtualization portfolio includes on and off-premise infrastructure, thin clients, software and services to provide application access from any device. Dell’s reference architecture provides sizing guidance and configuration recommendations for Dell PowerEdge servers; PowerVault storage; PowerConnect networking; Wyse cloud clients, OptiPlex desktops and Latitude tablets; SonicWALL network security; and virtualization software from Citrix, Microsoft, VMware, and Dell.

According to the company, this architecture has been tested and validated to work with leading retail POS applications and peripherals. A comprehensive spectrum of Dell services is available for Cloud Client Computing for Retail, including transition consulting and implementation for new customers.

Availability

Cloud Client Computing for Retail will be released in three phases. On March 4, 2013, solutions featuring POS, kiosk and back office systems with on-premise or retailer-hosted cloud infrastructure will be available. In Summer 2013, additional store systems will be supported including digital signage and surveillance hardware. In Fall 2013, Dell-hosted retail cloud infrastructures will become available.
