Dell today published details for three new web-scale converged storage appliances that will be joining the company’s XC Series. The new appliances are built with 13G PowerEdge servers as the foundation and are equipped to handle applications such as virtual desktop infrastructure, private cloud storage, and big data. The new appliances can be configured with more than a 50% increase in storage capacity and double the rack density of previous XC offerings.
In comparison to the five appliances which comprised the XC Series when it was launched in 2014, these new offerings also allow customers more options for drive types and sizes, processors, and memory. As with prior entries in the XC Series, the new appliances are integrated with Nutanix in order to manage converged environments at the VM level. One highlight of the new appliances is the 1U XC630 appliance, which according to Dell can support more virtual desktop users than the XC720xd, its 2U predecessor.

Dell’s XC appliances are designed for incremental scaling with a “pay-as-you-grow” model and are managed using the Nutanix Prism management framework. In addition to managing XC Series appliances, Prism can define and manage a hyper-converged infrastructure from other devices which implement REST APIs for integration with third-party management systems.
