Dell today announced the availability of two new backup appliances along with updates to its AppAssure data protection software. Dell’s new AppAssure-based DL1000 backup, recovery, and restore appliance is intended for small business and managed service providers. The new DR2000v is a virtual deduplication appliance for remote and branch offices.

Dell DL1000

The backup appliance utilizes a small form factor PowerEdge R220 server with lightweight AppAssure data protection software for backup and recovery. The DL1000 is available with either 2TB or 3TB of usable capacity, and the 3TB version is also available bundled with two Microsoft Hyper-V virtual machine licenses. It is designed as a turnkey solution for small businesses that can work in physical, virtual and cloud environments.

The DL1000 can be configured to take snapshots as often as every 60 minutes using AppAssure changed data tracking and de-duplication functionality to incrementally transfer only changes made between snapshots. The DL1000 features a cloud connector to use a public cloud as the target for AppAssure archives including Amazon S3, Microsoft Azure, RackSpace, and OpenStack-based platforms.

Dell DR2000v

Dell Backup - 2014 Key Technologies Pie Chart

The DR2000v is a new addition to Dell’s DR backup and deduplication appliance series designed for deployment to remote and branch offices. The DR2000v is a virtual appliance for VMware ESXi and Microsoft Hyper-V hypervisors and is being licensed in capacity points of 1TB, 2TB or 4TB. The DR2000v provides edge-to-core backup and disaster recovery without requiring additional backup-specific hardware at the edge. It requires four virtual CPU cores, 8GB RAM, and 200GB in addition to the appliance’s rated storage capacity.

The DR2000v must be deployed in tandem with a physical Dell DR appliance at the core data center, including the DR4000, DR4100 or the DR6000. It supports several mainstream backup software applications including Dell’s NetVault Backup and vRanger and utilizes the same global, in-line, variable-block deduplication as other DR appliances.

Along with the launch of the DR2000v, Dell is adding cascaded replication and replication seeding capabilities to the entire DR series. Cascaded replication replicates an image to a third site for additional redundancy and flexibility during recovery scenarios. Replication seeding works by copying data for the initial image via a CIFS share or portable device to seed the target system, which reduces the amount of time required to establishing a disaster recovery site.

AppAssure 5.4.2

AppAssure 5.4.2 is the latest version of Dell’s data protection software solution, adding support for Hyper-V Generation 2 Virtual Machines and VMware VM Hardware version 10. This release uses a new cloud account management interface to streamline archival integration with Microsoft Azure, Amazon S3, Rackspace, and any OpenStack-based platforms. The AppAssure 5.4.2 management interface also exposes functionality to import cloud archives back into AppAssure repositories. AppAssure 5.4.2 provides scheduling features to automate archive operations on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis using complete or incremental backups. AppAssure 5.4.2 also adds FIPS 140-2 Certification for secure applications.

The DL1000, DR2000v, and AppAssure 5.4.2 are available now from Dell or through the channel. Pricing for the DL1000 starts at $4,300 for 2TB of capacity, $6,000 for 3TB, and $8,300 for 3TB with two licensed Microsoft Hyper-V virtual machines.
