Dell has announced the general availability of DDOS 7.9 for PowerProtect DD series appliances, its second OS release of the year. The new DDOS 7.9 is highlighted by the addition of Smart Scale, a new feature for PowerProtect appliances, and improvements to Dell’s PowerProtect DD Virtual Edition (the company’s software-defined appliance), for in-cloud deployments. Dell initially announced these changes back in May during Dell Technologies World.
DDOS 7.9 – Smart Scale for PowerProtect Appliances
Smart Scale for PowerProtect appliances allows for the pooling of multiple DD series appliances, offering up to 48PB of usable capacity and >3EB of logical capacity with typical deduplication rates configured under a single namespace. As a result, Dell indicates users can optimize their protection storage with non-disruptive data mobility to:
- guide placement of workloads
- perform migrations with automatic client redirection
- gain valuable capacity insights and recommendations across the environment to project capacity utilization
In addition, onboarding and decommissioning of new appliances are done by moving Mobile Storage Units (MSUs) around in a pool. This goes for applications as well, as Smart Scale can move a backup set to another appliance in the pool that has more free space. The Smart Scale appliances are also delivered via PowerProtect DD Management Center (the multi-system management console) for free.
At this time, Smart Scale supports the DD9900, DD9400, and DD6900 appliances and integrates Dell PowerProtect Data Manager, Dell NetWorker and third-party backup software.
Extending PowerProtect DD Virtual Edition Cloud Support
PowerProtect DD Virtual Edition (DDVE) is the software-defined version of Dell’s PowerProtect DD series appliances and can be deployed either on-premises or in-cloud. DDVE aims to extend data protection to the cloud for long-term retention, replication, and cloud-native application protection.
As of this release, DDVE now supports in-cloud deployments for AWS, Azure, Google Cloud Platform, and both AWS and Azure Gov Clouds and is deployable directly from any major hyper-scaler marketplace. In addition, DDVE also now supports Alibaba cloud with which it can run in instances up to 96TB.
Availability
Smart Scale is now generally available.
