Dell Updates Server, Storage, and Data Protection Platforms Addressing Increased AI Adoption

by Harold Fritts

Dell delivers significant updates to its server, storage, and data protection platforms.

Dell Technologies recently announced significant updates to its server, storage, and data protection offerings, targeting organizations seeking to modernize their data centers. These enhancements address evolving IT demands driven by increased adoption of AI, complex modern workloads, and escalating cybersecurity threats.

PowerEdge Server Innovations

Central to Dell’s latest innovations are updates to Dell PowerEdge servers. Designed for robust performance, energy efficiency, and scalability, the PowerEdge R470, R570, R670, and R770 models, powered by Intel Xeon 6 processors with performance and efficiency cores SKUs, cater to demanding workloads, including HPC, virtualization, analytics, and AI inferencing. Specifically, the Dell PowerEdge R770 significantly enhances workload consolidation by freeing up power and reducing space utilization by up to 80% per 42U rack. With up to 50% more cores per processor and 67% greater performance, these servers minimize data center footprints, achieving sustainability goals and lowering the total cost of ownership without compromising performance.

Furthermore, the Dell PowerEdge R570 offers impressive energy efficiency, achieving record-breaking Intel performance per watt, which helps enterprises maintain performance while lowering energy costs. Additionally, Dell’s adoption of the Data Center–Modular Hardware System (DC-MHS) architecture, in alignment with the Open Compute Project (OCP), ensures future-ready, standardized server designs, streamlining integration, and providing customers with greater flexibility.

We just wrapped up our in-depth review of the Dell PowerEdge R770. We found it to be a powerful and versatile server platform, well-suited to meet the demands of modern data centers. Its cutting-edge hardware, modular design, and robust security features make it an attractive option for organizations looking to deploy AI, HPC, and traditional enterprise workloads.

Dell OpenManage and iDRAC Updates

Enhancements to Dell OpenManage and updates to the Integrated Dell Remote Access Controller (iDRAC 10) have streamlined server management. These improvements ensure robust protection and facilitate real-time monitoring. When paired with the PERC 13 PCIe Gen 5 HW RAID controller, customers can achieve up to 33 times lower write latency, significantly boosting performance.

Dell AIOps Delivers AI-Powered Analytics to PowerStore

The storage portfolio also received significant upgrades. Dell PowerStore’s latest software release introduces AI-powered analytics through Dell AIOps, formerly known as CloudIQ, offering automated alerts, proactive performance analytics, and carbon footprint forecasting. Enhanced zero-trust security, which includes Department of Defense-compliant smart card authentication and improved backup restoration times, strengthens data protection. In addition, advanced file system support enables more efficient storage management, secure file snapshots, and simplified migration from Dell Unity systems.

Next Generation ObjectScale

Dell also introduced the next generation of the Dell ObjectScale platform, which is touted as the highest-performing object storage solution in the industry. ObjectScale X560 HDD-based systems accelerate key workloads like media ingest, backups, and AI model training with 83% faster read throughput. ObjectScale XF960 delivers up to 2X greater throughput per node than the closest competitor and up to 8X greater density than previous-generation all-flash systems. Additionally, ObjectScale’s multi-site federation, geo-replication, global namespace, and integration with Wasabi for hybrid cloud solutions improve its efficiency and resilience.

Dell PowerScale enhances AI capabilities through its scale-out architecture. Dell delivers up to 6PB of rapid data access per 2U node by utilizing high-density all-flash storage nodes, significantly boosting GPU utilization and AI performance density. Hybrid and archive nodes such as the PowerScale H710, H7100, A310, and A3100 now include updated compute modules, which reduce latency and improve long-term AI training data management.

PowerProtect Focuses on Cyber Resilience

Dell PowerProtect has also seen substantial upgrades, emphasizing cyber resilience and efficient data protection. The PowerProtect DD6410 offers exceptional scalability from 12TB to 256TB, delivering 91% faster restore times and industry-leading deduplication efficiency.

Dell PowerProtect Ready Node

The new all-flash PowerProtect Ready Node provides a compact, energy-efficient solution with up to 61% faster restores and significantly reduced power consumption and footprint. Updated PowerProtect Data Manager now integrates anomaly detection and supports advanced backup management for Microsoft Hyper-V and Red Hat OpenShift Virtualization environments.
