Dot Hill has been awarded a patent for a write-cache management feature that intelligently manages cache usage. As a result, Dot Hill indicates that this will allow their AssuredSAN storage solutions to improve write performance by up to 100 percent in demanding storage workloads with high stream counts.

This new write-cache feature will also allow Dot Hill to design AssuredSAN storage systems to be optimized for maintaining high performance during randomized sequential workloads. The company believes that this is vital to their success in vertical markets including Media and Entertainment, Video Surveillance, Telecommunications, and Oil and Gas, all of which need storage solutions that can effectively manage multiple data streams with high throughput. In addition, Dot Hill AssuredSAN storage systems (such as the AssuredSAN Ultra48 and AssuredSAN Ultra48 Hybrid, which use Dot Hill’s RealStor management software) will allow these businesses to edit video content faster, consume more network traffic streams, and analyze seismic data more quickly. 

The new patented technology improves write performance to RAID arrays by intelligently managing limited memory resources in advanced storage controllers. In addition, the controller preserves statistics pertaining to what is stored in the write-data cache as well as the history of previously received writes. Using these statistics, the controller then selectively maintains or stores information to storage devices in the write-data cache, all the while continuously maintaining space for new write-data.
