At EMC World 2014, EMC has announced the acquisition of DSSD, which will operate as a standalone unit within EMC’s Emerging Technology Products Division. EMC envisions additional products being added to the flash storage portfolio in what they're terming "rack scale flash storage." The DSSD team is well versed in file systems, networking and storage technologies. Very little is public about what the company has been working on but the DSSD technology is thought to be a combination of hardware and software to better enable flash to perform well for big data. The transaction is expected to close sometime in the second quarter of 2014, subject to customary closing conditions. Financial terms were not disclosed.

EMC doesn't have an immediate product release but they talked briefly about the vision for rack scale flash storage that's more capable than any other flash storage solution available. EMC has, however, indicated that the products based on the new DSSD rack-scale flash storage architecture are expected to be available in 2015 and will be optimized for:
- In-memory databases (e.g. SAP HANA, GemFire, etc.)
- Real-time analytics (e.g. risk management, fraud detection, high-frequency applications, Pivotal HD, etc.)
- High-performance applications used by research and government agencies (e.g. genomics, facial recognition, climate analysis, etc.)
Capable doesn't just mean performance, of which these products will have in spades. Rack scale flash is also about the ability to scale storage with simplicity of management along with support for key big data applications via native application interfaces.
