EMC is announcing an all-cash deal to acquire ScaleIO, a developer of server-side software that will augment EMC’s Flash offerings. EMC will incorporate ScaleIO into its EMC Flash Product Division, and ScaleIO’s software will be combined with EMC’s PCIe Flash cards, such as their EMC XtremSF, in Enterprise Private Cloud and Service Provider environments. ScaleIO’s Elastic Converged Storage software will also coagulate with EMC offerings, namely within the XtremSW Suite that EMC introduced this year. Further details of the acquisition were not disclosed, though EMC says it will not have a meaningful impact on EMC GAAP or non-GAAP EPS for the 2013 fiscal year.

ScaleIO supports virtualized and non-virtualized environments and can scales from tens of servers into thousands. It creates a virtual pool of server-based storage by combining SSDs, PCIe Flash cards, HDDs or a combination. In doing so, ScaleIO’s goal is to enhance the use and management of storage.
With this news, EMC is deepening their commitment to organizations interested in deploying flash across their IT infrastructure – from servers to entire arrays. EMC already offers hardware and software via XtremSF PCIe cards and the XtremSW Suite of software, and they also provide all-Flash arrays in the form of XtremIO. EMC is also a leader in hybrid arrays that utilize flash with its VMAX and VNX storage.
