Today EMC announced a major suite of updates and new solutions for the company's data protection offerings. The announcement outlines enhancements throughout the EMC Data Protection Suite, a new Data Domain operating system, and new releases of VPLEX and RecoverPoint that overall are meant to align EMC’s data protection portfolio across physical, virtual, and cloud storage environments. Newly announced technologies underscore EMC’s approach to promoting its comprehensive data protection-as-a-service functionality for software-defined storage environments.
The Data Protection Portfolio will offer new integrations with primary and protection storage platforms along with increased integration with hypervisors and enterprise applications. Within the EMC family, the Data Protection Suite’s Avamar solution and the Data Domain operating system feature a new, complete integration. New snapshot management will be available for Isilon, VNX, and NetApp arrays. EMC will also offer enhanced security features and new Linux support for Mozy public clouds along with what the company describes as “unique integration” between the Data Protection Suite and VMware vCloud Director or Microsoft System Center Virtual Machine Manager.
A new release of the Data Domain operating system emphasizes data protection as-a-service capabilities. Multi-tenancy support for Data Domain cloud deployments will now offer client or department isolation for large enterprises and service providers, allowing Data Domain to power data protection as-a-service deployments. New Data Domain Boost for Enterprise Applications connects to Oracle, SAP, SAP HANA, DB2, and SQL Server. According to EMC, Data Domain can now support a billion of archive files with legal hold for compliance.
New VPLEX and RecoverPoint software releases have been announced with MetroPoint topology, an availability and disaster recovery configuration for two sites with remote replication to a third site and continuous data protection for all three sites. MetroPoint deployments are specified to sustain a simultaneous failure of two out of the three sites. A new VPLEX Virtual Edition solution allows VPLEX to be deployed as a virtual appliance in order to offer continuous availability and data mobility within VMware environments.
Availability
The new EMC data protection products will be generally available in the second quarter of 2014.
