With IDC’s latest Worldwide Quarterly Enterprise Storage Systems Tracker, EMC was most likely pleased to see that they have topped the list once again in most categories. Going along with their announcement that 2016 is the year of all-flash, EMC believes that the IDC report as well as their own growth in market share of all-flash, reinforces the shift by the industry toward all-flash. EMC has also announced that they have landed several all-flash customers as well.

All vendors may not feel that this year is the year of all-flash but EMC is certainly benefiting from it. According to EMC, between 2014 and 2015, EMC increased its base of flash customers globally by 78%, with revenue for flash offerings increasing by 104% in the second half of 2015 over the first half of 2015. EMC’s XtremIO business also achieved a $2 billion run rate for bookings in the fourth quarter of 2015, capping full-year 2015 XtremIO revenues of more than $1 billion. XtremIO has been very impressive at its ability to generate customers achieving $1 billion dollars in bookings in just 588 days.
As stated above, EMC is doing well overall not just in the all-flash side of things. According to IDC’s Worldwide Quarterly Enterprise Storage Systems Tracker, EMC is currently the top total enterprise storage system vendor by revenue and top external enterprise storage system vendor by revenue. EMC also claims that they have a 40.3% market share in the all-flash array market for the fourth quarter of 2015, up over 4% from the previous year. They go on to claim that they have 37.7% market share for all-flash array vendor revenue, more than two-and-a-half times the next competitor’s market share.
EMC has several all-flash products currently. They have the above mentions XtremIO, an all-flash version of their VMAX, the new ultra-high performance DSSD D5 NVMe flash, and their simplified and lower cost Unity. It will be interesting to see the steps forward EMC makes as it goes even further into all-flash, and it will be interesting to note how its competitors respond.
