Video surveillance surrounds us at most times, from public transport to retail environments to the top of traffic lights. As businesses switch from analog based video surveillance to megapixel, networked IP-based video surveillance solutions (video being the most storage-intensive application workloads), the need for reliable and scalable storage solutions is skyrocketing. According to a September 2014 study by HIS Technology, sales of surveillance equipment are forecasted to grow from $15 billion in 2013 to $26 billion by 2018 which is two times faster than the overall IT market. The primary fuel to the growth in surveillance is from security concerns in all forms of government. Because these videos are used to deter, contain, or identify a crime they have to be stored safely, for longer periods of time.
The physical security industry needs open and flexible "edge to core" solutions to help them rapidly adapt to the changes in industry requirements. EMC's new VNX-VSS100 storage system is designed and configured for the edge (near the cameras). Based on the VNX platform to deliver availability, simplicity, and affordability, the VNX-VSS100 array compliments the EMC Isilon, which is designed for core (central processing) environments. Isilon now has new performance and multi-protocol Data Lake features. These features improve consolidation of cameras, accelerate high-resolution workflows, and improve cost of ownership.
EMC also announced today an increase in investments to expand capacity and capability of its dedicated labs for testing and validation of video surveillance solutions. EMC Video surveillance labs are a joint collaboration platform that achieves global validations across the world. These validations come with extensive documentation to speed and simplify deployment of video surveillance solutions.
Ingram Micro, Avnet, and Scansource will be carrying the VNX-VSS100 and Isilon platforms as part of their video surveillance solutions. Axis, Genetec, Milestone, and Verint have all certified their gear on EMC's edge-to-core platforms.
Availability
Both the VNS-VSS100 and Isilon solutions are available globally now.
