EMC has sent out a letter to its Velocity channel partners stating their disk drive prices will rise 5 to 15% beginning in January, 2012. These increases are due to the floods that are ravaging Thailand, which caused hard drive companies to raise their prices a few months ago. Until now, the large storage array and service suppliers haven’t had to raise their prices due to the supply constraints.

These increases are due to the floods that are ravaging Thailand, which caused hard drive companies to raise their prices a few months ago. Until now, the large storage array and service suppliers haven’t had to raise their prices due to the supply constraints.
EMC’s Senior VP of Global Channel Sales, Gregg Ambulos, stated in the letter that they tried to shield their partners and customers by “absorbing the cost increases in order from the impact of higher drive pricing.” However, despite their attempt, they were forced to raise prices. “We have determined however that we must raise prices in Q1 for an indefinite period of time in order to offset the continued high drive prices we are seeing from our primary suppliers.”
Ambulos added that all current prices will still be honored until the end of 2011 and hopes that these increases will only be temporary.
