Geyser Data—Tape Backup as-a-Service

by Tom Fenton

Geyser Data offers a cost-effective backup solution using Spectra Cube tape library, LTO-9 media, and BlackPearl S3-compatible object storage.

Data backups are one of IT’s most important functions but only become a high-profile activity when things go wrong. Large enterprises staff entire departments dedicated to backups. Yet, in many SMBs, it is a part-time task often performed by junior-level employees with antiquated hardware and software. This is a recipe for disaster and not disaster recovery.

Upon considering this matter, our interest was piqued upon learning about Geyser Data, a provider offering a service that automates numerous laborious tasks associated with tape backups and renders them as a service.

Brian and I met with Nelson Nahum, CEO of Geyser Data, to better understand this service and discuss his company’s offerings.

Geyser Data is the industry’s first cloud-based tape as-a-Service (TaaS) offering. TaaS is a modern data storage category that utilizes magnetic tape technology in a cloud-based, as-a-service model. It combines the benefits of traditional tape storage, such as high durability and low cost, with the convenience and flexibility of cloud services.

TAPAS – Powered by Spectra Cube

TAPAS uses the cloud-optimized tape library Spectra Cube, Spectra Certified LTO-9 media, and Spectra BlackPearl S3-compatible object storage to establish an object-based tape infrastructure that seamlessly integrates with any Amazon S3 or S3 Glacier application.

Use Cases

Backup & Archive

  • With quick and easy access to cold data, you can reap value from a third storage tier for your big data lake, leveraging the 70% of data that is ‘cold’ after 90 days.
  • Individual reserved cartridges revolutionize your data analytics. Quickly download your data and unleash the power of insights with instant analysis.

Data Analytics

  • Use it as the archival tier on a backup system or as an external copy of your on-prem storage.
  • Replace your current cloud storage and archive to drive savings and better performance.

Artificial Intelligence

  • Use it as the archival tier on a backup system or as an external copy of your on-perm storage.
  • Replace your current cloud storage and archive to drive savings and better performance.

 Key Features

Customers will have greater visibility and control of data placement with Geyser Data Cloud Tape Library as-a-Service.

Browse

Customers can browse and report the files of a cloud tape library. They can also report on files on a specific tape (LTFS crawling)

Tag

Files can be tagged on Geyser’s cloud tape libraries. Customers can place data on dedicated tapes based on tags. That tagged data is also searchable according to the tags assigned.

CTLs

Geyser offers Premium Cloud Tape Libraries (CTL) with a higher priority on read access than regular CTLs. Customers can change CTL levels based on their needs and control when to move data from disk to tape.

Tape Access

Customers can eject tapes from CTL, and Geyser will send a bill for the ejected tapes. Finally, customers can consolidate data from tape to tape.

Cost-Effective Data Access

Geyser Data’s CTL eliminates restore and egress fees. Businesses can access and transfer their data without extra costs, making it ideal for data analytics and AI model training.

Geyser Data’s service prides itself on being a cost-effective backup solution. It utilizes the highly rated Spectra Cube cloud-optimized tape library, Spectra Certified LTO-9 media, and Spectra BlackPearl S3-compatible object storage to create an object-based tape infrastructure. This infrastructure is fully compatible with any Amazon S3 or S3 Glacier application. Geyser Data’s cloud-based platform allows customers to specify their backup objectives, providing them with state-of-the-art hardware, software, and support at a fraction of the cost of in-house solutions or other cloud services like AWS S3 Glacier or Azure Blog Archive Tier.

Customers own the physical tape, which is stored in a secure data center where the data is written, which allows for true air-gapped isolation for backups.

Storagereview has previously covered tape library systems, and we still believe that tape is a critical resource for effective backup and archival. View our post on Spectra Logic.
