Back in November of 2015, we covered Google’s introduction to Custom Machine Types for its cloud platform. This features allows users to build the VM in the shapes (vCPU and memory) they need for their given workload, in other words they would no longer have to over buy VMs to get what they need for a given workload. Google has announced this week that Custom Machine Types are now generally available.

This features allows users to build the VM in the shapes (vCPU and memory) they need for their given workload, in other words they would no longer have to over buy VMs to get what they need for a given workload. Google has announced this week that Custom Machine Types are now generally available.
As previously stated, workloads can vary and not fit predefined VMs. If the workload is just slightly over what is sold by cloud providers, users must buy the next size up and pay for resources they aren’t using. Custom Machines Types will give users the flexibility and freedom to build VM with the resources they need and charge them by hourly usage of he resources. Users can select as few as 1 vCPU per VM and as high as 32 vCPU per VM (however vCPUs must be bought in an even amount after 1) and up to 6.5 GiU per vCPU.
Google offers this service with flat pricing based on per vCPUs and per GiB of memory usage. Custom Machine Types can be used with CentOS, CoreOS, Debian, OpenSUSE, Ubuntu, RedHat, and Windows operating systems or users can bring their own Linux variant. Google is reporting that customers are saving an average of 19%, and as much as 50%, using Custom Machine Types.
Availability
Google Custom Machine Types are available now and start as low as $0.01002/vCPU and $0.00156/GB.
