Capping off a flurry of other data storage announcements, Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) announced the Edgeline EL1000 and Edgeline EL4000: converged systems for the Internet of Things (IoT). Enabling real-time decision-making, these systems combine data capture, control, and storage.

Now that IoT devices are generating more and more data, and that data is invaluable to organizations looking to learn from it. That’s where the Edgeline EL1000 and EL4000 come in. Each offers real-time analytics and machine learning on-site, with lots of visualisation options. For example, should something go wrong, a tech can be dispatched to inspect the system with a tablet. An augmented reality HUD opens with data visualization overlaid on top of the system on the tablet’s screen, allowing the tech to quickly and easily identify problems.

The EL4000 in particular offers support for HPE’s Vertica Analytics Platform, which grants it the ability to not only provide analytics, but also use machine learning to increase the usefulness of the data captured. Both the EL1000 and EL4000 use Aruba’s Virtual Intranet Access VPN client to secure traffic between devices and data center. Additionally, Vertica on Edgeline provides closed-loop analytics that give organizations the ability to derive immediate insights from their IoT initiatives.

No platform handling IoT tasks is complete without addressing the unique security risks posed by the IoT devices and their vulnerabilities. In light of this, HPE also released enhanced security capabilities. For this, HPE bolstered Aruba ClearPass to automatically detect IoT devices in-network, enforce security policies, and exchange status with other security systems.

HPE has also unveiled their HPE IoT Transformation workshop (TW), which is an interactive HPE facilitated workshop that helps to define customers’ IoT goals and strategies while gaining business technology alignment. HPE indicates that the IoT TW is the first of a full suite of services that are specifically designed to help customers successfully implement IoT solutions based on their needs and limitations.
