HGST Announces Active Archive SA-1000

by Adam Armstrong

Today Western Digital Corporation (WDC) introduced a new model to its HGST Active Archive Object Storage System, the SA-1000. This latest model of Active Archive is targeted at media and entertainment digital data preservation, life sciences data pools, and cloud backup. WDC states that the SA-1000 will enable smaller object storage footprints with easy-to-manage building blocks to scale capacity as needed.

As we previously stated, The Active Archive System is ready out of the box and delivers 4.7PB (3.5PB usable) in a single rack. It is simple to scale-out with a plug-and-play, all it needs is a power source and a network connection. This is part of HGST’s “Simplicity at Scale” foundation, enabling organizations a simple and cost-effective way to scale-out so they can focus on their primary business not on their storage infrastructure. It also allows for limitless scaling without the costly need of replication.

The SA-1000 allows customers to start small and scale as they grow. Small is a relative word here as the SA-1000 can scale from 672TB to 28PB of total capacity geo-dispersed across three data centers in a single namespace. This brings about quite a bit of flexibility to customers looking to deploy an Active Archive Object Storage System. The SA-1000 comes with all the other benefits or Active Archive Object Storage System including cloud-scale data durability, secure data manageability, multi-geo data dispersion for wide-open access to data, and easy disaster recovery.

HGST has also enhanced the software of all Active Archive Object Storage Systems now enabling scale-up, scale-out, clustering, and end-to-end security features.
