HGST Begins Shipping 10K RPM 1.8TB Ultrastar C10K1800 Hard Drives

HGST today announced that it is now shipping the first batches of its new Ultrastar C10K1800 hard drives in capacities up to 1.8TB. The Ultrastar C10K1800 is a 2.5-inch enterprise-class HDD with a 12Gb/s SAS interface and represents the first 10K drive to market at these capacities. HGST's new C10K1800 offerings are meant for applications which can leverage its low cost-per-GB, often as part of a storage infrastructure pools the Ultrastar C10K1800 with faster 15K hard drives or SSDs.

The Ultrastar C10K1800 utilizes HGST’s media cache architecture which accelerates write performance along with providing a non-volatile cache for reliability and data integrity during power loss events. According to HGST, media cache provides the C10K1800 family with an increase of up to 2.5X in random write performance and a 23 percent improvement in sequential performance over the company's prior generation of 2.5-inch 10K HDDs. The Ultrastar C10K1800 line also specifies a reduction in power consumption of up to a seven percent from its predecessors across active and idle power modes.

The Ultrastar C10K1800 enterprise hard drive family is specified for 2M hours MTBF and an annualized failure rate of 0.44 percent. It is offered with a five-year limited warranty. The C10K1800 will be available with security and encryption functionality including Instant Secure Erase (ISE), Trusted Computing Group (TCG) SSC-compliant Self-Encrypting Drives (SED), and TCG enterprise SED with FIPS (Federal Information Processing Standard) 140-2 certification, Level 2.
