Highly Reliable Systems has announced a new high-performance, high-capacity Direct Attached Storage system using hard drive based removable cartridges. The RAIDFrame makes an entire 3-drive RAID array, along with its controller, a removable backup cartridge – a unique feature when compared to conventional RAID storage systems. Highly Reliable Systems’ removable RAIDPac was recently certified with Seagate 4TB drives, which enables 12 TB of uncompressed data in a single removable backup cartridge.
The system attaches directly with a single eSATA or USB 3.0 cable. The RAIDFrame is currently available in 1, 2, and 5 bay enclosures. The 2-bay system allows further redundancy by permitting two RAIDPacs to be mirrored; a configuration Reliable Systems calls RAID 51. Its low cost, physical security, speed and raw size of the RAIDFrame system gives customers an alternative or a supplement to cloud or tape backup strategies.
No special drivers are needed, because each RAIDPac is viewed by the host system as a single, removable hard-drive. Unlike tape systems, RAIDPacs are directly accessible in case of an emergency without the RAIDFrame enclosure. Each RAIDPac has standard SATA and USB3 connections on the back in addition to the standard self-centering connector designed for daily swap inside the RAIDFrame. The entire product-line has also been upgraded to allow faster RAID5, faster mirroring and software management and monitoring of the RAIDPacs. Using imaging software on modern servers, backup and restoration performance can exceed 400GBs per hour.
The 6TB RAIDPacs (which contains three 2TB drives and RAID controller) are priced at $1208 USD and can be purchased through resellers. In addition, Highly Reliable plans to release a NAS that will provide an ethernet interface to the system in early 2012.
