Update 3/2/2012: Hitachi Deskstar 5K4000 Review Posted

Hitachi Global Storage Technologies has announced the Deskstar 5K4000 Internal Hard Drive Kit and the Touro Desk External Hard Drive. The Deskstar 5K4000 is a 3.5" desktop hard drive with 5400RPM CoolSpin technology, 32MB drive cache and SATA 6 GB/s interface. The Touro Desk family of external hard drives are available in capacities up to 4TB and feature the Deskstar 5K4000 inside.

The 4TB Deskstar 5K4000 provides 33 percent more capacity than current 3TB drives and is the first 4TB to be sold bare. Hitachi had previously announced a 4TB external hard drive, and a competing offering from Seagate is on the market as well, but the Deskstar 5K4000 is the first 4TB hard drive to be sold on its own.

The new drive features CoolSpin technology, which enables the Deskstar 5K4000 to have up to a 28 percent idle power savings over the Deskstar 7K3000 drives and an idle acoustic-level of only 2.5 bels. The drive also uses Advanced Format, which increases the sector size on HDD from 512 bytes to 4096 (4K) bytes. As a result, this increases its capacity and improves error correcting capabilities.

The 4TB Deskstar 5K4000 Hard Drive Retail Kit ships with all mounting screws, step-by-step instructions, and a software download that enables 32- and 64-bit Microsoft Windows, Apple OS X and Linux systems to take advantage of the full capacity and power the of the drive. The Retail Kit is currently shipping to online and retail stores in limited quantities with a suggested retail price of $399.99 USD.

Hitachi’s new drive is also halogen-free and is designed to be a power-efficient operation. These features have helped qualify it to attain the Hitachi EcoTrac classification, which “identifies products that minimize environmental impact in the areas of product design, manufacturing, operation and disposal.”

Hitachi GST will be shipping its Deskstar 5K4000 (bare drives and bulk pack) to OEMs, distributors, and channel partners worldwide in early 2012.
