G-Technology by Hitachi has announced its G-CONNECT portable wireless storage device for the Apple iPad and iPhone. No Internet connection is required to use the device and it can stream to up to five users at once.
G-Technology by Hitachi has announced its G-CONNECT portable wireless storage device for the Apple iPad and iPhone. No Internet connection is required to use the device and it can stream to up to five users at once.
Essentially, users can create their own WiFi hotspots wherever they go using the G-CONNECT. The device has an Ethernet port built into the back of it, so it certainly can also stream Internet if available; otherwise, it provides access to content stored on the device. It features 500GB of storage via a 2.5-inch internal hard drive and is powered by an AC adapter. Content can also be transferred to the device using the USB 2.0 connection on the back.
The device features WPA-2 password-protected security access. Up to five users can connect to the G-CONNECT and stream SD video at the same time, or up to three people can stream HD content at the same time. The G-CONNECT has a 150 ft. range and uses 802.11b/g/n wireless.
In addition to Apple iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch support, G-CONNECT also supports Android-based devices.
Competitors
Seagate offers a device with similar ideology: the GoFlex Satellite Mobile Wireless Storage device. The G-CONNECT appears to be superior in a number of ways. For starters, the G-CONNECT can act as a hot spot, streaming wireless Internet while the Seagate can’t. Additionally the G-CONNECT offers support for five or more users vs three and the G-CONNECT has a private secured folder. Kingston also has an iPAD storage offering but it only comes in 16GB or 32GB capacities since it uses flash storage instead of a hard drive.
