With today’s introduction of its Ultrastar C10K147, Hitachi throws its hat into the 2.5″ “small form factor” (SFF) arena and joins competing products from Seagate and Fujitsu.
In part driven by the continuing maturation and acceptance of the SAS interface (which continues to displace the disparate 80-pin SCA-style and 68-pin SCSI connector styles with a new unified standard), Hitachi’s entry into the game further bolsters the view that the future of enterprise storage rests in the 2.5″ form factor.
Ultrastar C10K147 Hard Drive’s Compact Size Optimized for Space & Power for Data Centers
|
The Ultrastar C10K147 hard drive provides a 50 percent smaller foot print and a 40 percent reduction in z-height over traditional enterprise hard drives. This compact size provides optimal space and power efficiencies while still delivering high performance with 10,000 RPM spin speed, high-speed SAS interface and 16MB data buffer. These features combine to make the Ultrastar C10K147 hard drive ideally suited for blade servers and 1U and 2U rack-mounted servers for mission-critical applications.
“With volume availability of our Ultrastar C10K147, we have delivered on our expanded 2007 enterprise product portfolio. The introduction of a small form factor enterprise hard drive and our milestone one-terabyte drive add depth to our enterprise HDD line-up and allow us to further penetrate this segment with a broader range of solutions to address our customers’ needs,” said Currie Munce, vice president, Enterprise HDD Business Group, Hitachi Global Storage Technologies.
