Hitachi has just announced the industry’s first single-platter 500GB hard drive with a 2.5-inch form factor, the Travelstar Z5K500. The drive features a slim 7mm thin design compared to most 2.5-inch notebook hard drives, which are 9.5mm.
Hitachi claims the Z5K500 consumes 1.8W of power while reading/writing and just 0.55W idle plus a nearly silent operation (1.9 idle/ 2.1 seek bels). The Z5K500 has a SATA 3.0Gbps interface, 8MB cache, and uses the new Advanced Format 4K sector size, improving error correction capabilities. It will also be offered in 250GB and 320GB capacities.
Hitachi is offering the Z5K500 as a stand-alone drive and also in its G-Technology G-Drive Slim portable external hard drive. The company says it is the thinnest 500GB 2.5-inch external hard drive available. The G-Drive Slim 500GB will ship to retailers in Q1 2011; pricing information has not been announced.
