Hitachi has announced an update to their Ultrastar line, the 2.5" C10K600 which is highlighted by 10K RPM speeds and 6Gb/s SAS interface. Hitachi claims the drive delivers up to 15 percent better random and 18 percent faster sequential performance than competitive products on the market today – a bold shot across the WD VelociRaptor’s bow. The Ultrastar C10K600 comes in 300GB, 450GB and 600GB capacities.

The C10K600 features a 64MB cache, which helps get seek times as low as 3.7 milliseconds and average latency time of 3.0 milliseconds. Hitachi has managed to deliver efficient power consumption numbers too, as the Ultrastar C10K600 touts an industry-leading (22% less than closest competitor) random read/write operating power specification of 5.6 watts and idle mode of 3.1 watts.

The Hitachi Ultrastar C10K600 is now shipping OEMs; consumer pricing has not been announced.
