Seagate has added to its PS4 and PS5 console external storage portfolio with the new officially licensed Game Drive. This includes a collaboration with one of the most highly-anticipated games of the year, Horizon Forbidden West. Available in capacities ranging from 2TB to 4TB, the new external hard drive is firmware-optimized for both PS5 and PS4 with the ability to play games (PS4 only) directly from the drive.
The new Game Drive is lightweight and offers plug-and-play via the high-speed USB 3.2 Gen 1 interface (though it features the old Micro-B connector on the drive itself), allowing gamers to use it right out of the box. It is also a bus-powered device, so you won’t need a separate cord to power the device.
Because the new Game Drive is a spinning HDD, it is certainly not meant for GPU-heavy, resource-intensive games. That means its main use case is for cold storage (inactive games/backups), which might be useful for PS4/PS5 gamers who have internal storage limitations and want to store their games on an external drive rather than re-downloading them.
Seagate collaborated with Sony Interactive Entertainment and game developer studio, Guerrilla, to create a very cool-looking Horizon Forbidden West branded version of the new Game Drive (release date of February 18, 2022). This officially licensed collectible HDD features Aloy (the game’s protagonist) front and center using a beautifully painted design. That said, it’s too bad you won’t be able to install and play the game itself on the drive (as it is expected to push the PS5/PS4 hardware more than any other game to date); it would have been nice to see an NVMe SSD model released alongside the HDD version.
Nonetheless, this is a great collector’s item for Horizon fans and gamers alike and will sit nicely beside a PS5 or desktop, since the original game is available on PC.
Availability and Pricing
Backed by a one-year limited warranty, the Horizon Forbidden West Seagate officially licensed Game Drive HDDs are shipping sometime in March for roughly $92 (2TB) and $140 (4TB). The Horizon Forbidden West Limited Edition Game Drive will go for a bit more at $100 for the 2TB model and $160 for the 5TB model.
