HP and VMware are announcing a new federated software-defined network (SDN) solution for unified automation of physical and virtual data center networks. The HP and VMware solution integrates the HP Virtual Application Networks SDN Controller with the VMware NSX network virtualization platform in order to provide automation of both physical and virtual network infrastructures. The new solution provides a centralized view with unified automation, visibility, and control of the data center network. The HP-VMware approach blends device-based and overlay models in order to consolidate physical and virtual devices under a common control plane.

As a further description of how the implementation operates, HP ConvergedControl software runs on the HP Virtual Application Networks SDN controller and leverages HP’s Intelligent Management Center (IMC), which is already integrated with VMware vCenter.
HP is also announcing that its new 5930 top-of-rack switches feature VXLAN intelligence and are designed to simplify extensions of network virtualization to the servers as part of the collaborative solution. The SDN Controller also supports the VMware Open vSwitch Database management protocol (also known as OVSDB), which enables HP FlexFabric switches to participate in the automated provisioning of the virtual network by VMware NSX.
Availability
The HP-VMware networking solution and HP ConvergedControl are expected to be available in the second half of 2014. HP’s 5930 switch is expected in December 2013.
