HP’s 3PAR StoreServ Storage lineup has been enhanced with systems and functionality to better support midmarket organizations adopting virtualization and cloud computing. Today’s announcement includes details about HP’s new 3PAR StoreServ 7000 Storage systems as well as resiliency and quality-of-service updates to the HP 3PAR Operating System Software.

These expansions to the 3PAR lineup are part of a broader refresh across HP’s Converged Storage solutions and services announced today.
The newest addition to 3PAR is the StoreServ 7000 Storage, which offers Tier 1 availability and performance at a starting price under $40,000. The addition of StoreServ 7000 Storage to 3PAR means that HP can offer a single product family from midrange to high-end deployments, with HDD, SSD, and tiered SSD/HDD configurations.

StoreServ 7000 Storage Technology Overview

According to HP, an all-SSD StoreServ7000 Storage configuration is capable of performing more than 320,000 IOPS in 8K 100% random read Iometer benchmarks. The 3PAR StoreServ 7000’s quad-controller design provides two paths to back-end disk, graceful handling of controller failures with HP 3PAR Persistent Cache, sub-LUN tiering across HDDs and SSDs, and synchronized 3-way replication. HP 3PAR Priority Optimization enables clients to manage the performance of individual applications to guarantee quality of service.

As part of the 3PAR family, the StoreServ 7000’s controller software can be nondisruptively upgraded and hardware without requiring extra software via HP 3PAR Persistent Ports. 3PAR Peer Persistence offers failover within or between data centers without disruption to the host operating system and has initially been qualified for VMware vSphere environments.

The system supports file and block data with in-line thin conversion and autonomic thin reclamation, which returns capacity to block- or file-based application as files are deleted. StoreServ 7000 file services include support of the Server Message Block 3.0 file protocol for increased performance, high availability, and security features such as data encryption at rest and in flight, file-level access control and clustered file services.

HP 3PAR SmartStart is modeled on the HP Enterprise Virtual Array (EVA) SmartStart to streamline deployment. Existing HP EVA Storage clients can also leverage the new HP 3PAR Online Import software feature to move data from HP EVA to HP 3PAR StoreServ using Command View EVA. The latest HP 3PAR Operating System Software includes a Web Services Toolkit and Representational State Transfer (REST) API that allows clients to integrate with their own automation tools.

HP Get Thin Guarantee

The HP 3PAR StoreServ 7000 platform is intended to reduce costs by reducing capacity requirements by at least 50 percent over legacy platforms, which HP offers as part of its Get Thin Guarantee. HP guarantees that 3PAR StoreServ 7000 customers can double VM density in VMware environments.

VMware integration includes vStorage API support, vCenter management plug-in, Site Recovery Manager replication adapter, and HP 3PAR Recovery Manager for VMware. Microsoft integration includes support for Offload Data Transfer (ODX), thin provisioning, space reclamation, and SMI-S Provider for System Center 2012 integrated management.

HP Technology Services

HP is offering new consulting and support services to support transition from HP EVA Storage Arrays to HP 3PAR Storage, including:

  • HP EVA to HP 3PAR StoreServ Acceleration Service guides the data migration process or performs the migration. HP Data Migration Service helps clients transition from competitive products to 3PAR StoreServ Storage.
  • 3PAR StoreServ 7000 Storage Installation and Startup Service helps deploy, configure, and test the StoreServ 7000.
  • HP 3PAR 7000 Replication Software Suite Installation and Startup Service and HP 3PAR Peer Persistence Software Installation and Startup Service helps clients plan, implement, and test new storage software as well as provide demonstrations.

Pricing and Availability

The HP 3PAR StoreServ 7200 starts as low as $20,000 list. The StoreServ 7400 starts at $32,000. Both models will be available globally on December 14. Existing HP 3PAR clients with a current maintenance contract can upgrade to HP 3PAR OS 3.1.2 at no extra cost.

HP 3PAR Priority Optimization software is expected to be available in 2013. All HP 3PAR thin software titles are included in the HP 3PAR 7000 OS Software Suite at no extra charge. New HP 3PAR StoreServ services are available now worldwide.
