HP is announcing StoreOnce Virtual Storage Appliance (VSA) which is a new hardware-agnostic, software-defined storage solution that is deployed as a VM on existing industry-standard server infrastructures. StoreOnce VSA can reduce capital expenses by up to 65% compared to a dedicated backup appliance. Running the same software as the physical HP StoreOnce appliances, it shares the same data services including cross-family replication, backup application integration, and federated deduplication. This new solution is the only deduplication technology that can be deployed from a target appliance, media server, application source, and VMs.

By deploying the HP StoreOnce VSA at a customer site while backing up data to a central location, the need to purchase, deploy, and manage dedicated hardware is eliminated. This greatly reduces the hardware investment required to support the remote sites and reduces the complexity to manage backups. Further, it minimizes the actual storage used for this purpose. Administered from a central location, StoreOnce VSA along with StoreOnce Catalyst enable customers to manage both local and remote backup and replication.
HP StoreOnce Enterprise Manager monitors and manages all backup appliances (both physical and virtual) from a central console that allows administrators to view backup performance, capacity utilization, and deduplication ratios. StoreOnce VSA and Catalyst are integrated with HP Data Protector, which provides deduplication at the application source, backup server, or target system. This allows organizations to decide where to deduplicate data in the backup process. It is also integrated with several Independent Software Vendor (ISV) solutions, including Symantec NetBackup and Backup Exec for deduplication on the backup server.
Pricing and Availability
StoreOnce VSA is available directly from HP as well as from channel partners starting in July at $3,500 per 10 TB of capacity.
