Today Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) announced what it is calling its most significant innovations to its 3PAR storage system to date. These new innovations include a new update to the HPE 3PAR Operating System, which should provide a futureproof foundation for Hybrid IT, a new Adaptive Data Reduction (ADR) for 3PAR, increasing DR over greater distances, and expanded copy management and automation capabilities.

These new innovations include a new update to the HPE 3PAR Operating System, which should provide a futureproof foundation for Hybrid IT, a new Adaptive Data Reduction (ADR) for 3PAR, increasing DR over greater distances, and expanded copy management and automation capabilities.
All-flash is taking over the data center world. And though it can solve performance and density issues there are still a range of concerns that need to be address. Not only that, there are emerging technologies (storage class memory and NVM Express) that are right around the corner. Customers may be unhappy with a refresh, if the technology is obsolete within a few months due to the changing nature of flash media. HPE is addressing these concerns with the new futureproof design of 3PAR (for example in a recent tech preview of 3PAR 3D Cache HPE demonstrated flash hyper-acceleration using SCM over NVMe).
Another example of futureproofing is HPE’s new 3PAR ADR feature. Data is only going to grow and organizations can’t have their storage full of duplicates. HPE claims that ADR can reduce capacity needs by as much as 75%. ADR can be selectively applied which can help cut down on wasting system resources. One feature that sets ADR apart from other data reduction programs is its use of a unique 3PAR Data Packing algorithm that organizes data writes in a way that avoids the garbage-heavy processes that weigh down other flash storage arrays.
HPE has updated 3PAR’s OS (3PAR OS 3.3.1). Some new benefits include all-inclusive licensing that simplifies purchasing and reduces costs by up to 30%. Also HPE is offering its HPE 3PAR Flash Now initiative. This initiative enables customers to acquire upgraded 3PAR flash array plus networking and data protection for just pennies/usable gigabyte/month via a cloud-like consumption model.
Benefits of the new 3PAR OS include:
- Accelerate applications running over iSCSI to reduce latency by up to 40% via 3PAR Express Writes optimization
- Better support cloud computing deployments with iSCSI updates that include expanded host connectivity and multi-tenant IP networking
- Serve more workloads with 3PAR File Persona updates that double scalability, automate provisioning and enable cross-protocol file sharing
On the data protection side of things, HPE is announcing the latest version of its Recovery Manager Central (RMC) for snapshots of data moving to secondary HPE StoreOnce Systems (StoreOnce Systems can now be replicated to the Cloud through StoreOnce VSA software in Azure for further protection). HPE states that RMC can now delver 23x faster backups, 7x faster restores, all with 9x lower CPU consumption. HPE says the latest version can save up to $500K is costs in a three year period. Within RMC is the new Peer Copy, copy management feature designed to protect data at the edge. Peer Copy enables bi-directional movement of snapshot data between StoreVirtual VSA and 3PAR arrays.
HPE has also updated its 3PAR StoreServ Management Console (SSMC). Now users can have SSMC automate and schedule large-scale data migrations, by large HPE means up to twenty-four 3PAR storage systems. The new SSMC also features HPE Smart SAN integration for fully automated, one-click SAN zoning of Fibre Channel networks.
Availability and Pricing
The HPE 3PAR next-generation operating system (3PAR OS 3.3.1) and HPE StoreOnce VSA for Azure are expected to be available worldwide in the first quarter of 2017. 3PAR OS 3.3.1 will be available at no additional charge for 3PAR customers with valid support contracts. The HPE StoreOnce VSA for Azure starts at $1400. HPE Peer Copy and HPE 3PAR Recovery Manager Central are expected to be available in the second quarter of 2017 worldwide at no additional charge for 3PAR and StoreVirtual VSA customers with valid support contracts.
