Today IBM announced it was adding new features to its Spectrum Storage Software Offerings. The new features will enable companies to prepare for using and backing up to the cloud. These new features are part of IBM’s $1 billion investment in software-defined storage (SDS), along with its other products for hybrid-cloud. IBM also stated that they have sold their Spectrum Storage line to over 1,000 new customers.

The latest version of IBM Spectrum Protect, v7.1.3, allows companies to backup to on-premises object storage or the cloud, without the need for cloud-gateway appliances. IBM Spectrum Protect currently supports Softlayer cloud infrastructure (an IBM company) but plans on supporting other public clouds in the future. IBM claims that its IBM Spectrum Protect servers, with its new enhanced software, can help large enterprise companies to consolidate backup servers to reduce cost (up to 53%) and complexity, while managing data growth from mobile, social, and internet of things. Smaller companies can also benefit from Spectrum Protect servers by eliminating the need for additional backup servers, media servers or deduplication appliances.
IBM is also making software enhancements to Spectrum Accelerate on Cloud. Spectrum Accelerate makes the software available as a service to IBM Cloud customers via SoftLayer infrastructure. It helps companies to deploy block storage on SoftLayer without having to buy new storage hardware or manage a large appliance farm. The new enhancements to the software-only version of Spectrum Accelerate will consolidate compute and storage resources on the same servers and help reduce costs.
