The Icy Dock SSD Xpander is an adapter that houses a 2.5" SSD. A SATA cable from the hard drive goes into the adapter and a SATA cable from the adapter connects to the motherboard. The adapter is the size of a normal desktop 3.5" hard drive and has the same universal mounting holes. The adapter has airflow vents for heat dissipation and a screw-less design and easy installation.

Icy Dock recommends using an ‘inexpensive’ second-generation SSD with about 250MB/s read/write speed and a 3.5", 7200RPM drive with 130MB/s read/write speed. If either the hard drive or the SSD fails, all data will be lost on both drives.

Pricing and Availability
The Icy Dock SSD Xpander is backed by a three-year warranty. It is available now for about $45 online.
